SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Defense ruled the third Golden Coast Conference match-up between new rivals LMU and San Diego State. And the 14th-ranked Aztecs found enough offense to earn a 6-4 win over the 19th-ranked Lions on Saturday afternoon at the Aztec Aquaplex.
LMU freshman Sky Flores had 12 saves to lead the Lions (10-18, 3-3) while the Aztec (15-14, 7-00 defense held the Lions to just 1-for-14 on the 6-on-5 advantage. San Diego State was 2-for-8. Both teams scored on a five-meter penalty shot.
With the win, the Aztecs clinch the regular season title in the GCC and the top seed in the upcoming GCC Championships, which will be helped April 29-May 1 at the Aquaplex in San Diego.
The teams traded goals throughout the first half and the game was tied at 3-3 at halftime.
The Aztecs then put some distance on the Lions with back-to-back goals by Taylor Gums and Tayla Walsh. Meanwhile, the Aztecs kept the Lions off the board to take a 5-3 lead into the fourth quarter. They then added to the lead as Caroline Israels scored her third of the game to make it 6-3.
Ivana Castro would score on a five-meter penalty with 2:34 to play for the final margin.
The Lions will finish conference play at Concordia on Thursday, April 21 at 1:30 pm and then end the regular season with Senior Day at the Burns Aquatics Center on Saturday, April 23 against CSUN at 12 noon.
