RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The LMU softball team suffered a pair of setback in Riverside, Calif., on Sunday, falling 12-7 to UNLV in a neutral site contest before dropping a 5-2 decision to UC Riverside.
After posting a five-game win streak that continued into their first game of the weekend - a 7-1 win over Yale in Northridge - the Lions have dropped four straight and now sit at 19-12 on the year.
Sophomore Alicia Brown was a bright spot in both games Sunday as she went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored in the opener against the Rebels. She added two more hits against the Highlanders, including her team-leading 10th double of the year.
LMU could not get its offense going early in either game, and its opponents took advantage, jumping out to big leads in each game.
UNLV scored three runs in the top of the first and would chase Lion starter Rachael Farrington out of the game after just two innings. Farrington surrendered six hits, one walk and four earned runs as she took the loss for LMU. Relievers Stephanie Crist and Andy Wellins didn't fare much better as the Rebels pounded out 15 total hits.
LMU would score in five of the game's seven innings, but could not catch the Rebels.
A pitchers' duel through the first three innings against UC Riverside, the Highlanders finally broke through with one run in the fourth and four in the fifth.
The Lions looked to rally in the seventh as Amanda Dirks launched a two-run home run and Meghan von Behren followed with a walk. But UCR pitcher Tayler Misfeldt would get the next three LMU batters out in succession to preserve her victory.
Six of LMU's final seven non-conference games will be contested at Smith Field where the Lions are 9-2 this year. The stretch begins Tuesday with a doubleheader against Cal Poly beginning at noon.
