LOS ANGELES - The 14th-ranked LMU women's water polo team found themselves in yet another thriller at the Burns Aquatics Center, and this time they got the one-goal win in regulation.
With 1:31 to play, senior Bridgette Alvarez took a feed at two-meter and outworked a double team to score with 1:31 remaining, lifting the Lions to a 7-6 win over 15th-ranked Princeton in game nine of the 2016 ZUMO LMU Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Less than 24 hours after falling in a heartbreaking five-overtime classic to San Jose State, the Lions erased a three-goal deficit to earn a win. The Lions improve to 8-14 on the season while Princeton falls to 13-3.
The Lions defense was solid once again as goalie Sky Flores made seven saves. Freshman Emily Byrne led the Lions with three goals and Caitlin Schafer had two goals and two steals.
With the game tied at 2-2, the Tigers scored three straight on goals from Morgan Hallock, Emily Smith and Lindsey Kelleher to take a 5-2 lead with 1:35 to play in the first half. The Tigers outscored the Lions 4-1 in the second quarter.
The second half belong to the Lions. Schafer scored back-to-back goals to make it 5-4 with 1:10 to play in the third quarter. The Lions shutout the Tigers 2-0 in the quarter.
Byrne then tied the game at 5-5 on the Lions' first possession of the final frame. The teams traded ejections before the Tigers took 6-5 lead with 3:52 to play on Kelleher's second goal.
Less than a minute later Byrne tied the game with 2:32 to play to set-up the game's final minutes.
The Lions will play California Baptist in Golden Coast Conference action on Mar. 24 at 4 pm.
