LOS ANGELES - The LMU softball team fell 5-3 to Harvard on Saturday afternoon in their first completed game as part of the LMU Softball Tournament.
The Lions (13-7) played five complete innings against Monmouth on Friday, but the game was halted due to rain. That game will resume Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. with the score tied 4-4 entering the top of the sixth inning.
Starting pitcher Stephanie Crist took a no decision after four solid innings of work for LMU. She struck out one and scattered seven hits for a pair of runs, one each in the second and fourth innings. Andy Wellins (0-1) took the loss after giving up the final three runs, including two in the top of the seventh.
After Harvard took a 1-0 lead with back-to-back doubles in the top of the second, LMU responded with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning. With one out, Sterling Shuster singled to short and Aria Pogni walked to put a pair of runners on. Hannah Montalban would line out for the second out, but Meghan von Behren followed with an RBI double to left, scoring Shuster. Pogni would go on to score on a balk before Stephanie Maciel grounded out to end the inning.
Harvard tied things up in the top of the fourth, but the Lions reclaimed the lead in the home half of the inning once again, this time on a Pogni solo home run over the left-field fence.
The Crimson rallied to tie the game again in the sixth, but LMU did not have an answer this time, going three up, three down in the bottom of the inning.
A Catherine Callaway two-RBI triple in the top of the seventh would stand as the game-winning hit as the Lions' final rally fell short.
After completing Friday's halted game Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m., the Lions will face Fairleigh Dickinson at 2 p.m.
