LOS ANGELES - The offenses set the tone early in the second meeting between LMU and Portland. It was Portland's three-pointer that did the heavy lifting, hitting 15 to push them to a 92-78 win on Saturday afternoon.
The Pilot's (11-15, 5-8) finished 15-for-31 from long distance, the second most three-pointers by an LMU opponent in Gersten Pavilion and the most since Alaska-Anchorage hit 15 on Nov. 24, 2012. They finished 53.2 percent from the field hitting 33-for-62. The Lions (10-14, 3-10) finished hitting 44.4 percent (28-for-63), hitting 9-for-25 from long distance. They shot 50 percent in the first half but just 38 percent in the second.
"Our defense in transition was not as good in the second half and it gave them some easy looks and they got rolling," said Head Coach Mike Dunlap. "And we didn't shoot the ball as well in the second half and our offense bled into our defense. Josh got some good looks in the first half, but then we didn't get him touches quick enough in the second."
Adom Jacko did his part, scoring 35 points with seven rebounds on 13-for-20 shooting. It was the best scoring output by a Lion since Drew Viney had 35 against San Diego on Feb. 25, 2010. Joshua Spiers added 11 points, all in the first half.
"Jacko continues to get better and better each week," said Dunlap. "He is a raw player and we continue to see him evolve. He will continue to get better."
Alex Wintering had 29 points, hitting 5-for-9 from three while D'Marques Tyson hit 6-for-12.
The Lions had just six turnovers to Portland's 11 and outscored them 15-6 in points off turnovers. However, the Pilots out rebounded the Lions 40-28.
The game was tied at 46-46 after the first half thanks to Wintering's three-pointer at the buzzer. The Pilot's, up 53-50 after a Marin Mornar three-pointer, went on a 13-2 run to pull away.
The Lions head back to the Bay Area next week, starting with Pacific on Feb. 11 at 7 pm.
