CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - Bouncing back after a heartbreaker in extra innings to start the day, the LMU softball team closed out Friday's action at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic (Week Two) with a 2-0 shutout of Oregon State.
The Beavers (10-2) entered the weekend receiving votes in the most recent ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 poll and on Thursday knocked off No. 12/11 Oklahoma, 6-4.
Rachael Farrington (4-2) picked up her first shutout of the season as LMU (7-5) sent OSU to their first scoreless outing of the year. The junior lefty struck out two, walked three and scattered six hits in the complete-game victory.
The Beavers got a runner as far as third base on three occasions, including in the bottom of the sixth and seventh with just one out. But each time, Farrington and her defense came through. In the sixth, she would end the inning with a pop up to short and a fly out to center. And in the seventh, the final two Beaver batters fouled out to short and popped up to third.
"Rachael threw her heart out and competed like an ace for all seven innings," said Head Coach Sami Strinz-Ward. "We did a tremendous job of bouncing back against a red-hot Oregon State team."
Meghan von Behren provided the offensive heroics in the win, leading off the game with a home run to left center. The Lions would manufacture another run in the fourth to give Farrington a two-run cushion.
"Meghan led off the game with an amazing 15-pitch at-bat, which she won with a home run," Strinz-Ward said. "That really set the tone for our offense and we took aggressive and purposeful swings. Shianne was also clutch with a double to score Dirks (in the fourth inning)."
The Lions opened the day with a 5-4, 8-inning setback to Boise State. After taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, the Broncos went ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the third. von Behren provided an RBI double to right-center in the top of the fourth to knot the score at 3-3 and eventually send the game into extra innings.
With the international tie breaker in effect in the eighth, the Lions plated one run on an RBI single by Sterling Shuster. But Boise State would have the final at-bats and came through with a walk-off two-run homer.
"We let one slip away today, but the way that we bounced back and competed one pitch at a time was great to see," said Strinz-Ward.
The Lions will be back in action Saturday, facing Bethune-Cookman at 12:30 p.m. The weekend concludes Sunday versus Colorado State at 11:30 a.m. and No. 20 Fresno State at 2 p.m.
