CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - LMU softball suffered a pair of setbacks on the opening day of play at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Friday evening, dropping a tough 6-5 decision to New Mexico before falling 8-0 in six innings to Army.

A big lead slipped away late for the Lions (4-3) in their opener against New Mexico (3-4). LMU built a 5-0 advantage through four complete innings with one run in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth.

The Lobos got back a pair of runs back in the fifth on an RBI double and sacrifice fly. Lion pitcher Hannah Bandimere worked her way out of the inning after the two earned runs, getting a fly out for the third out.

But New Mexico was not finished, putting together a four-run sixth on three hits and one LMU error, which led to a pair of unearned runs. After going three-up, three-down in the home half of the sixth, LMU looked for one final rally in the seventh.

Megan von Behren led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Stephanie Maciel. But LMU failed to move her any further as Sterling Shuster struck out swinging and Amanda Dirks flied out to center to end the game.

Bandimere took the loss (2-2) for LMU. She struck out three, walked two and scattered nine hits for six runs, four earned, in 5.2 innings. Rachael Farrington struck out two and walked one in 1.1 innings of relief.

In the late game against Army (2-6), the Lions managed just three hits while committing four errors in the field. Farrington gave up a pair of runs in the first inning before giving way to Andy Wellins, who made her first appearance of the year in the circle. She would surrender seven hits and two walks for four runs, three earned. Bandimere tossed one inning, but game up the final two runs of a five-inning sixth to end the game early.

The Lions continue play at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Saturday at noon against Binghamton. LMU also faces George Washington at 7:30 p.m. before closing out the weekend with a Sunday meeting against Bethune Cookman at 4:30 p.m.
