LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The 16th-ranked LMU women's water polo team finished the 2016 UC San Diego Triton Invitational with a split, defeating No. 18 San Diego State and No. 11 UC Santa Barbara to finish the tournament in seventh place.
The Lions opened the tournament with a 7-4 win over conference rival San Diego State and then fell to top-ranked UCLA (14-7). The Lions then opened Sunday with a tough 8-5 setback to No. 9 UC Irvine. They closed with a 15-11 win over the 11th-ranked Gauchos to close the tournament at 2-2. They are now 4-6 on the season.
Bridgette Alvarez led the Lions in the tournament with eight goals, followed by freshman Hana Vilanova with six. Erin Byrne and Ivana Castro added five each.

The Lions have the next weekend off before traveling to another tournament loaded with the nation's best, the UC Irvine Anteater Invitational Feb. 27-28.
