PROVO, Utah. - In its final game of 2016, the LMU women's basketball was unfastened by BYU, 76-59, Saturday afternoon at the Marriott Center.
BYU (6-7, 1-1 WCC) held LMU (5-8, 0-2 WCC) to shoot just 33 percent (13-of-39) from the floor, while the Cougars connected on 50 percent from beyond-the-arc and from deep.
Jackie Johnson fueld the Lions with 18 points, scoring 15 of those in the second half. Leslie Lopez-Wood tabbed 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Brittney Reed and NK Ilang chipped in with eight and seven points, respectively. BYU's Cassie Broadhead finished with a game-high 20 points.
GAMEDAY STORYLINES
• Reed and Lopez-Wood combined for 9 of LMU's 11 points to open the game, while the Lions defense held BYU to start shooting just 3-of-10 from the floor. The Cougars attacked heated up to close out the quarter, turning in a 12-3 run to hold a 22-17 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
• LMU went cold to open the second quarter as the Cougars stayed hot, opening the frame with a 10-0 streak to push it's command to 32-20. Makenzie Cast snapped LMU's seven-minute dry spell with a triple, while NK Ilang tallied five straight points to cut the deficit back to single digits at 36-27. However, BYU closed out the quarter once again, this time with an 9-3 spurt to hold a 45-30 command at the half.
• Jackie Johnson poured in eight of LMU's 13 points in the third frame, while as a team the Lions hit nine free throws, though the Cougars held a 67-43 lead heading into the final quarter.
• LMU outscored BYU, 16-9, in the finale frame, but the damage was done as the Lions dropped their second straight WCC contest, 76-59.
• BYU outscored LMU, 34-14, in the paint as four different players scored in double figures.
• The Cougars dished an assist on 23 of their 28 field goals.
