Lions Drop WCC Opener at Saint Mary's, 74-59

MORAGA, Calif. - In it's WCC opener, the LMU women's basketball team fell to Saint Mary's hot-shooting offensive attack, 74-59, Thursday night at McKeon Pavilion.

Saint Mary's (6-6, 1-0 WCC) shot 44.3 percent from the game, including a 51.7 clip (15-of-29) in the first half, while holding LMU (5-7, 0-1 WCC) to shoot just 37.5 percent (21-of-56) from the floor.

Jackie Johnson paced the Lions with 16 points and five rebounds. Leslie Lopez-Wood followed with eight points, while Makenzie Cast and Brittney Reed chipped in with six points apiece. Saint Mary's had a trio of double-digit scorers, led by Stella Beck with a game-high 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting.

GAMEDAY STORYLINES

Saint Mary's used a pair of runs to sandwich the first quarter, starting the game with an 8-2 streak before it closed the quarter with a 7-2 spurt to hold a 22-12 advantage after the opening stanza.

The Gaels took their largest lead of the half at 38-23 midway through the second quarter before LMU turned in an 8-0 run, led by five points from Lopez-Wood, to put the Lions within striking distance at 38-31. Saint Mary's closed out the quarter with four straight points to take a 42-31 adverting into the intermission.

The Gaels forced 10 turnovers in the first half and tallied 10 points off LMU miscues, while their bench chipped in with 15 points. Saint Mary's shot 51.7 percent (15-of-29) from the floor and 50.0 percent (6-of-12) from beyond-the-arc in the opening half.

The Lions went cold in the third quarter, shooting just 20.0 percent (3-of-15) from the field, while Saint Mary's continued to have the hot stroke with a 50.0 percent mark (9-of-18) shooting from the floor.

LMU outscored Saint Mary's, 20-12, in the final frame, but it was not enough to overcome a 23-point deficit as it fell, 74-59.

Saint Mary's outscored LMU in the paint, 34-12, and held a 45-31 rebound advantage.
