LOS ANGELES -- In the final regular season game at Sullivan Field this season, the Loyola Marymount women's soccer allowed a game-ending overtime goal for the first time since playing at then-#25 ranked Santa Clara a season ago. The Broncos (6-6-4, 3-2-1) scored 7:09 into the first overtime period to top LMU (10-4-3, 5-2-0) in a tough-fought 2-1 game.
"All season, we've been trying to manage our legs and we played a tough 90 the Friday before," said Head Coach Michelle Myers. "In terms of the second half, I thought we got a couple good looks, but just wasn't able to put one away. At the end of the day, this is a tough one because this is how we lost to them last year.
After a tight first half, LMU scored the game's first goal in the 59th minute. Two Lions got their head off a corner kick from Maddie Medved. First Emily Carman leaped to head it forward from the top of the box to teammate Sarina Bolden's head around the six-yard box. Bolden used her head to one-time the goal past the oncoming keeper and score her team-high sixth goal of the year.
With Santa Clara pushing for the equalizer, the Broncos fed Jordan Jesolva at the top of the box. Following some footwork with her back to goal, Jesolva turned and fired in her sixth goal of the year at the 71:38 mark.
Despite Santa Clara outshooting the Lions 12-4 in the second half, the Broncos did not find the back of the net in regulation, forcing overtime. LMU goalkeeper Charlee Pruitt made six of her nine saves in the second half.
Both teams earned a corner kick in the overtime period, but in the 98th minute, Santa Clara put away the game-winner. Gudrun Arnardottir scored her first goal of the year and ended the match after heading home the SCU corner kick.
"I'm proud of the girls and proud of the way we battled," said Myers. "We learn from it and move on with two single games coming up. In this conference, anything can happen over the next two weeks. We are still looking to try and get into the postseason."
Prior to the game, Loyola Marymount recognized the four members of its senior class. Katherine Henshall, Sophia Leksan, Nikki Martino, and Sydney Zuccolotto were all met on the field with members of their families for a special pregame ceremony.
The Lions next travel to nationally-ranked Pepperdine for their lone game in the final weekend of October. The game will kick at 1 p.m. on Oct. 30 and stream on TheW.tv.
