STOCKTON, Calif. - Despite being outshot in the opening half, a pair of goals in the final 30 minutes of action was enough to secure victory for the Loyola Marymount women's soccer team. The Lions (9-3-3, 4-1-0) topped West Coast Conference opponent Pacific (1-10-1, 1-3-0), 1-0, after the game was moved to San Joaquin Delta College because of weather.
"Both Pacific's game field and their backup field were under water," said Head Coach Michelle Myers. "Fortunately, we were able to go to the community college down the road. I don't know if I've ever played in rain that hard. The wind definitely affected the way we played."
Despite being outshot 10-7 in the first 45 minutes, LMU answered in the second half with 12 shots to hold the game advantage, 19-17.
Just as the hour mark passed, Maddie Medved put the Lions ahead with her fifth goal of the year. Now tied for the team lead in goals with Sarina Bolden, Medved finished her shot from the side of the box in the 61st minute. Pacific's goalkeeper did get a finger on it before it went past her into net.
The Lions added a second goal in the 78th minute when Pilar Torres drilled another long shot from outside the box over the leaper Tiger keeper. Torres' goal was her fourth of the year, and the Lion's second unassisted goal of the game.
Charlee Pruitt only saw one of Pacific's 17 shots go on target. The Lion goalkeeper made her lone save in the final minute of the shutout. LMU finished with nine shots on frame and had four corner kicks in the win.
"We told the girls that there was no way we were going to play normal soccer out there today," said Myers. "The weather changed everything. Having the wind in the second half was to our benefit."
The Lions return to Sullivan Field this week for the final time of the regular season as they host San Francisco on Oct. 21 and Santa Clara on Oct. 23. Sunday's game will include senior day festivities to recognize LMU's graduating class of Katherine Henshall, Sophia Leksan, Nikki Martino, and Sydney Zuccolotto.
