LOS ANGELES - Five different Lions found the back of the net Friday night at Sullivan Field as the LMU women's soccer team posted a 5-1 win over visiting Detroit.
The win was the second straight for the Lions, who move to an even 2-2-0 on the season. Detroit fell to 2-3-0 overall. The five goals scored marked the highest scoring output since 2007 when LMU shutout Lamar University, 9-0.
Jo Blankenship got the Lions on the board in the 15th minute, blasting a 30-yard free kick from straightaway past the reach of Detroit goalkeeper Claudia Eustaquio. Less than three minutes later, Shannon Kent made it 2-0 with a rebound score off a saved shot by Blankenship.
Freshman Sarina Bolden would round out the Lion scoring in the first half, leaping over her own teammate and a Detroit defender to head home a cross from Maegan Gibson.
Sydney Zuccolotto and Morgan Hilby joined the act in the second half, each scoring on a header. Zuccolotto redirected a beautiful cross from Jill Farley on the left wing in the 57th minute and Zuccolotto added the fifth and final goal in the 76th minute off a free kick ball sent in by Melissa Lewis.
Detroit avoided the shutout in the 63rd minute as Anna Mindling scored an unassisted goal after a series of Titan shot attempts.
LMU finished the night with a dominant 23-5 shot advantage, including 12 on frame. Sophia Leksan and Charlee Pruitt each played a half in goal for the Lions, with Pruitt making one save in the second half.
The Lions return to action Sunday, hosting Toledo on Sullivan Field at 1 p.m.
