MORAGA, Calif. — LMU defeated Saint Mary's 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon in Moraga, Calif.
The Lions scored in the first half and made it stand despite being outshot 16-10, with goalkeeper,
JJ Hoover, making seven saves for the shutout.
Alaina Lee scored an unassisted game-winning goal on her only shot. Lee's goal was her second of the season, and she currently leads the team with seven points.
Hoover made seven saves and recorded a shutout, it was her fourth consecutive clean sheet.
Alaina Lee put the Lions in front at 25:33, scoring the only goal of the first half for a 1-0 advantage.
Izzy Smith played a low cross into the box that was deflected right into Lee's path and she did not miss. She hit the ball first time and jumped up in celebration after seeing it nestle into the back of the net.
Cameron Bourne added shots on both sides of Lee's goal, and
Elise Bolanos sent an attempt high and left in the 41st minute. Hoover made another save in the 39th minute as the Lions held Saint Mary's scoreless and went into halftime ahead 1-0.
The Lions kept Saint Mary's scoreless in the second half, with
JJ Hoover making four saves as the match closed at 1-0. The Lions generated a three-shot sequence shortly after halftime, as
Elise Bolanos had an attempt saved at 49:04,
Kate Kubiak hit the left woodwork at 49:13 and
Sarah Melcher missed high at 49:22. Bolanos's initial attempt forced the Gaels' goalkeeper into a frenetic save that fell right to Kubiak. Kubiak drilled the ball just wide of the goalkeeper and off the left post. The Lions maintained possession and found Melcher for a shot that went just wide.
Hoover saved Ashlyn Vaughn's shot at 55:23, and the Lions put another chance on frame when Melcher forced a save at 56:16. Saint Mary's pushed with three corners and multiple shots from the 67th through 70th minutes, but Hoover stopped Anna Emperador and Maddie Lucas before Bourne hit the top woodwork for the Lions at 71:06. Bourne found a lot of space after a cutback from the left side and curled a shot that squared up the crossbar.
Hoover added a save on Brooklyn Smith at 75:28, Smith put the Lions' final shot on frame at 78:55, and the Lions saw out the scoreless half to finish with the 1-0 result.
