Sept. 1, 2015 LOS ANGELES - LMU men's water polo has been picked to finished second in the Western Water Polo Association, as chosen by the league's seven coaches in the 2015 Preseason Coaches' Poll.
The Lions, who advanced to the 2014 WWPA Championship game a year ago, return six starters, including seniors Milutin Mitrovic, Vuk Cvetkovic, Kyle Etrata, Daniel Camburn, Cory Page and 2014 All-American Emanuel Di Stasio.
Only four points separated the top three teams with UC Davis earning 33 points and three first place votes to earn the nod to replace two-time champion UC San Diego. LMU also earned three first place votes and was just two points behind the Aggies with 31 points. The Tritons were picked to finish third with 29 points, earning a single first place vote.
Rounding out the poll was Air Force with 18 points, followed by Santa Clara with 16, California Baptist with 14 and Fresno Pacific with six.
The 2015 WWPA Championships will be hosted by the Air Force Academy on Nov. 20-22.
The Lions, who were ranked 14th in the nation in the 2015 Men's Varsity Preseason Coaches' Poll, begin their season this weekend at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational.
They open with Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 8 am and close the opening day with ninth-ranked UC Irvine at 5:20 pm. On Sunday, the Lions face sixth-ranked Long Beach State at 12 noon, followed by Redlands at 4:30 pm.
