SANTA CLARA, Calif. - LMU softball rallied for a 5-3 win in the final game of a three-game West Coast Conference set against Santa Clara Friday, securing the series victory on opening weekend.
With the Friday split, the Lions are now 20-22 overall and 2-1 in WCC play. Santa Clara now sits at 11-25 overall and 1-2 in league action.
In game one, LMU held a 2-0 lead over the Broncos through five innings. But the home team rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 advantage. The Lions responded by scoring an unearned run in the top of the seventh as pinch runner Alice Cen, running for Stephanie Crist who reached on a hit-by-pitch, scored on an error by the SCU center fielder following an Alicia Brown single.
But Santa Clara would convert in its final at bats, as Casandra Padilla singled home Jenna Krummen for the game-winning run.
The Lions bounced back in the nightcap, this time breaking a 3-3 tie with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh. The key innings saw Caitlin Harman drive home the eventual game-winning run as her single through the left side plated Amanda Dirks. LMU added an insurance run two batters later when Courtney Moore's RBI-single scored Brown.
Santa Clara did not have a second rally in them, managing just one hit in the final frame and a ground out to end the inning.
Harman and Meghan von Behren each collected a pair of hits in the win while Alex Finie drove in two runs. Rachael Farrington was the pitcher of record in both games, tossing 6.1 innings in the opener and the final 2.1 innings in the nightcap.
WCC play continues next week as the Lions return home to Smith Field to host San Diego in a three-game set. The teams will square off in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 11, followed by a single game on Sunday, April 12.
