SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Rachael Farrington tossed seven scoreless innings and a pair of Lions crossed home plate on a Santa Clara fielding error as LMU took a 2-0 win over the Broncos in both teams' West Coast Conference opener Thursday in Santa Clara.
Farrington (14-10) allowed six hits, one each in six different innings, did not issue a walk and struck out two for her fifth shutout of the season.
The Lions (19-21, 1-0 WCC) also managed just six hits, including a 3-for-3 performance from Alicia Brown, two hits by Stephanie Crist and one by Stephanie Maciel. But three of those hits would come in the fourth inning to set up the game-winning runs.
With Crist on third and Brown on first, Caitlin Harman reached on a fielding error by Santa Clara right fielder Kimberly Goulart. The misplay allowed by Crist and Brown to score and give the Lions a 2-0 advantage.
Santa Clara (10-24, 0-1 WCC) looked to rally in the seventh as a single and hit by pitch gave the Broncos a pair of runners for the first time all day. But with two outs, Farrington would get Goulart to ground out for the final play.
The Lions and Broncos conclude their three-game series Friday with a pair of games beginning at 10 a.m.
