The LMU sand volleyball team (4-11) could not hold off a comeback from #6 Long Beach State (12-4) on Friday, falling 3-2 on the road in the season finale.
LMU took an early 2-0 lead with victories on courts three and four, but Long Beach State won the final three courts, including taking down LMU's top pair of Betsi Metter and Sarah Sponcil in a hard-fought three-set match.
With the match tied at 2-2, Rachel Nieto and Sammee Thomas defeated Kristen Castellanos and Taylor Scioscia, 21-13, 21-10, on court five to earn the victory.
Metter and Sponcil will now await the announcement of the AVCA Sand National Championship pairs. The National Championship tournament will be contested May 1-3 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
