LOS ANGELES - A 1-0 lead in the fourth would not hold Sunday at Smith Field and the LMU softball team surrendered three runs late to San Diego in a 3-1 West Coast Conference setback.
The Lions dropped to 21-24 on the year and an even 3-3 in WCC action while USD took the series win and improved to 26-17 overall and 5-1 in league play.
LMU struck first as a pair of hits led to a single run in the home half of the fourth. Stephanie Maciel led off with a single to right, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Amanda Dirks moved Maciel to third with a single through the right side and an Alicia Brown sacrifice fly to center sent Maciel home.
The Toreros answered back in the top of the fifth as a Olivia Sandusky double down the left field line scored Danielle Mavridis from second. USD would add two more runs in the sixth, beginning with the eventual game-winner on an RBI-single by Chloe Kaneko which scored pinch runner Hannah Gilliland. San Diego added an insurance run on a fly ball error in the LMU outfield.
The Lions got a runner on base in both the sixth and seventh, but could not advance them beyond first base.
Rachael Farrington (16-12) took the complete-game loss for LMU after scattering seven hits for three runs (two earned). She did not record a walk or strikeout in the game.
Paige Von Sprecken (19-7) picked up with win for USD after fanning six and allowing just three hits and one run.
The Lions are back on the road next week, traveling to Stockton, Calif., for a three-game WCC series at Pacific. The teams will meet for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 18, followed by a single game on Sunday, April 19.
