RIVERSIDE, Calif. - LMU softball closed out play at the Highlander Classic Sunday morning, earning a 12-2, 5-inning win over Howard before falling 6-0 to host UC Riverside.
Sophomores Alex Finie and Amanda Dirks led LMU at the plate in the early morning win as the Lions posted a 10-run first that all but put the game in the books. Finie went 4-for-4 with four-RBI, three runs scored and a home run. Dirks drove in three runs and finished 2-for-3 at the plate, including a double.
In all, the Lions tallied a combined 17 hits off of a trio of Howard pitchers.
Rachael Farrington improved to an even 6-6 on the year with the five-inning, complete game. She recorded one strikeout, walked one and scattered eight hits. With the Lions leading 10-0, she surrendered a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, but closed things out in the fifth, earning a double-play line-out for the final outs of the game.
The Lions' bats would go silent in their final game Sunday, as the team collectively managed just two hits against the Highlander staff. After a scoreless 3.5 innings, UCR broke through with a four-run fourth and two-run fifth. Andy Wellins took the loss, giving up all six earned runs.
LMU returns home to Smith Field for a doubleheader against Providence on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
