LOS ANGELES - UC Riverside broke open a tight game against the LMU softball team, scoring three times in the sixth and six in the seventh, sending the Lions to a 10-2 setback Sunday at the LMU Muscle Milk Invitational at Smith Field.
The Highlanders pushed a single run across the plate in the third with their third hit of the game. LMU starting pitcher Rachael Farrington continued to keep UCR in check through the fourth and fifth innings. But the Highlanders would begin the sixth inning with a single and two batters later, a throwing error by Farrington opened things up for the visitor. One earned run and two unearned runs would score in the inning, giving UCR a 4-0 advantage.
The Lions battled back in the bottom of the sixth as Alicia Brown sent Stephanie Maciel across home plate with an RBI-single. Hannah Montalban would collect the second RBI on a ground out.
UC Riverside went on to add six more runs in the seventh courtesy five hits and two walks. Farrington (12-10) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs (two earned) in 5.2 innings.
LMU (17-21) managed just four hits off of the Highlander pitching staff, including one each from Brown, Montalban, Rachel Williams and Aria Pogni.
The weeklong homestand concludes Monday as the Lions take on Seattle University at 11 a.m in the final game of the of the LMU/Muscle Milk Invitational. Tickets are on sale now for the tournament by clicking here.
