LOS ANGELES- Fitting of a conference championship game rematch, 13th-ranked LMU and 17th-ranked San Diego State found themselves in yet another one-goal affair, this time going way of the Aztecs, 9-8, at the Burns Aquatics Center Thursday afternoon.
Taylor Gums scored her only goal of the game at the tail end of a 6-on-5 opportunity with 28 seconds left in the contest to lift the Aztecs to the win in Golden Coast Conference action. San Diego State improves to 11-11 on the season a perfect 4-0 in conference play. LMU falls to 13-7 and 0-1.
Mackenzie Beck led the Lions with three goals, while Caroline Israels added three for San Diego State.
It was tight from start to finish as the Aztecs took two goal leads of 3-1 and 5-3 just to see the Lions come back and tie it. Beck scored with just 39 seconds left in the second quarter to tie the game at 3-3 heading into the locker room. It was the only goal of the frame as Jordan White had three of her nine saves in that quarter.
The offenses opened up in the third quarter with each team score three. The Aztecs took the 5-3 lead on a 6-on-5 goal from by Ioli Benekou three minutes into the quarter. Goals from Ivana Castro and Laura Lopez tied the game at 5-5 with 3:10 left. Each team would add one more to make it 6-6 going into the final quarter.
The Lions would then take their first lead of the game when Kiana Etrata scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity with 6:33 to play. Goals from Alyssa Diacono and Israels gave the Aztecs the lead right back, 8-7, with 3:03 to play.
LMU wasn't finished as they would tie it on a goal from Lopez, a 6-on-5 score with 1:03 to play. It would set-up the final minute and Gums' game winner.
Both teams will play in the 2015 ZUMO LMU Invitational starting tomorrow and running through Saturday.
The ZUMO Invitational is presented by the Lions Athletic Fund and tickets will be sold with all proceeds benefiting the LMU women's water polo team's Lions Athletic Fund.
