LOS ANGELES - Home runs by Stephanie Maciel and Alicia Brown helped break open a 3-3 tie against Buffalo as the LMU softball team put up an eight-run fifth inning in an 11-3 win over the Bulls Wednesday at Smith Field. The Lions dropped their second game of the day, 5-3, to Harvard.
Knotted at three runs apiece heading into the home half of the fifth Brown led off the inning with a ground out. But then the rally began. Rachel Williams singled up the middle, Caitlin Harman singled to the pitcher and Courtney Moore hit an RBI single to left that scored Williams and gave the Lions the go ahead run.
Meghan von Behren laid down an RBI bunt single that scored Harman and Alex Finie loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. The Bulls would make a pitching change, but to no avail as Maciel followed with a grand slam. Three batters later with Stephanie Crist on first after drawing a walk, Brown followed with a game-winning two-run shot that gave LMU an eight-run lead.
Rachael Farrington improved to 10-9 with the complete-game victory. She scattered five hits and one walk for three runs (one earned).
In the nightcap against the Crimson, an LMU fielding error in the third eventually led to a to a bases-clearing double and an RBI-single as Harvard took a 5-1 lead. The Lions got one run back in the fifth and one in the sixth, but Crimson reliever Taylor Cabe allowed just two hits over the final two innings to earn her first save of the season.
Maciel and Harman each had two hits in the game while Crist (4-8) took the loss in the circle.
