The LMU men's tennis team (8-6) collected a pair of 4-1 victories at home on Tuesday, topping #72 Utah and Army at the LMU Tennis Center. The Lions have now won six straight matches.
The day began with a victory over the ranked Utes, as LMU won the doubles point by way of victories on the top court and court two. Errol Smith and Joat Farah, the reigning WCC Doubles Team of the Week, topped Cedric Williams/Matt Cowley to hand LMU the edge, but Johan Jonhagen/Santiago Sierra evened the doubles competition with a victory over Othar Kordsachia/Luke Bohuslav. With the attention centered on court two, Utah's Parker McGuinness/Jamey Swiggart erased a 5-2 deficit only to have LMU's Charles Boyce/Cristobal Rivera eventually earn a tie-breaking 7-4 victory to earn the 7-6 decision and the point in the team score.
Jonhagen won the first singles point on court six to even the match score, but LMU rebounded nicely to record the next three decisions, including victories from Boyce at #1, Rivera at #4, and Farah on court five. While Farah and Rivera both posted straight-set victories, Boyce put away Utah's top player Willems in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.
In LMU's second match of the day, the Lions once again took the doubles point with victories at courts two and three. Boyce and Rivera topped Harrison McCormick and Grant Riechmann, 6-3, before Todd Volmari and Kordsachia took down Kyle Barnes and Austin McCasin, 7-6 (3) to hand LMU the point.
The Lions came out strong in singles play against Army, claiming straight-set victories on courts two through four to earn the team win. Smith (6-4, 6-2), Rivera (6-2, 6-0) and Farah (6-2, 6-2) all improved their records with the decisions. Kyle Barnes earned Army's lone victory on the day, recording a 6-3, 6-1 decision on court six.
With two victories today, Rivera has now won six straight singles matches, while Farah has collected five straight. Both players are 10-6 on the season, with Rivera sitting at 9-5 in dual matches. Boyce and Rivera are now 8-2 in doubles, while Farah and Smith are 6-2.
LMU will return to action on Friday when it travels to Portland for a match at 10 a.m.
