The LMU sand volleyball team (1-5) dropped a pair of matches on Friday and competed in the USC Pairs tournament on Saturday as part of a busy weekend at USC's Merle Norman Stadium.
The #6 Lions fell, 3-2, to #4 Florida State on Friday before coming up short at 4-1 to #3 USC. Betsi Metter and Sarah Sponcil won both of their matches at #1 singles and reached the final of the USC Pairs tournament on Saturday, eventually falling to USC's top pair of Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes. The duo defeated Jace Pardon/Sarah Wickstrom (FSU), 20-22, 21-19, 17-15, and Claes/Hughes by scores of 21-19, 21-15 in match play. They are now 11-3 overall this year.
LMU's other victory over Florida State came at court two, as Taylor Akana/Litara Keil defeated Julie Brown/Stephanie Pellitteri, 12-21, 21-14, 15-10.
In addition to Metter and Sponcil's success in tournament play, LMU's Lindsay Carr/Kristen Castellanos defeated Lorna Brandt/Jo Kremer (USC), 28-26, in first-round play, and Avery Bush/Anne Marie Taylor bested Stephanie Pellitteri/Sarah Wickstrom (Florida State), 28-26, in the round of 16.
The Lions will return to action on March 20 when they travel to Cal State Bakersfield.
