LOS ANGELES - A seven-run fifth inning capped by Lindsey Matoi's first collegiate home run propelled LMU softball to an 8-0 shutout of Bakersfield and conclude a doubleheader split Saturday at Smith Field. The Roadrunners captured game one, 2-0.
After being shutout in game one, the Lions scored quickly in game two as Aria Pogni crossed home plate on an Alex Finie double to right-center field. Pogni had earlier reached on a two-out error.
The big inning then came as the Lions pounded out six hits for seven runs to end the game via the eight-run mercy rule. Stephanie Maciel drove in the inning's first run, followed by a Pogni RBI-single. Amanda Dirks kept things rolling with an RBI-double. Alicia Brown drove in a pair of runs with a double to right-center to make it 6-0 before Matoi capped things off with a two-run blast over the left-field fence.
Rachael Farrington (3-6) tossed a complete-game one-hitter for the Lions. The sophomore lefty also struck out one and did not issue a walk in five innings of work.
In the opener, LMU collected six hits, but left six runners on base in the 2-0 shutout. Andy Wellins (1-1) tossed a solid complete game, fanning three, walking three and scattering eight hits for two runs.
The Roadrunners broke through just once, posting both runs in the third on back-to-back RBI-hits.
LMU returns to action Sunday, facing Sacramento State at noon in a neutral-site game to be played at CSUN in Northridge, Calif.
