LOS ANGELES - Back home in the friendly confines of Gersten Pavilion, and in front of a rowdy crowd of students from Orville Wright Middle School and WISH Charter Elementary School as part of Family of Schools Kids Day at the Game, the LMU women's basketball team ran away with a 92-65 win over San Diego State Thursday afternoon.
The win moves LMU to 4-6 on the season while the Aztecs fell to 3-6 overall.
The Lions had four players in double-figures led by senior Sophie Taylor with 21 points. Freshman Cheyanne Wallace had 20 points and five blocks off the bench and Leslie Lopez-Wood added 17 points, including five threes. Freshman Andee Velasco added12 points and six assists.
LMU never trailed in the game, shooting nearly 52 percent in the first half on their way to a 41-34 lead at the break. Their defense was the game changer in the second half, beginning with another big third quarter. Out of the gates the Lions scored the first eight points while forcing a pair of turnovers and a missed shot by SDSU.
McKynzie Fort, who led the Aztecs with 15 points, snapped the Lion streak briefly with a lap at the 6:30 mark of the third period. But Velasco responded with a three, Lopez-Wood knocked down her third of the game and Wallace hit one of two free throws to open up an 18-point advantage.
The Lions would extend their lead to as many as 25, outscoring the Aztecs 32-14 in the third period. The spread would balloon to as many as 30 late in the fourth period.
Eight of 10 Lions who saw action scored as the team surpassed the 90-point margin for the second time this season. For the game, LMU hit 53 percent from the field, 43.5 percent from three and 80 percent from the charity stripe.
After allowing a 41 percent clip to SDSU in the first half, LMU held the Aztecs to shooting just 31 percent from the field and 2-of-12 from three in the second half.
The Lions are back on the road Saturday, traveling to face Cal Poly. Tip off from Mott Athletic Center is scheduled for 2 p.m. and can be seen live on the Big West Conference Network.
