IRVINE, Calif. - LMU men's basketball couldn't overcome 27 percent shooting at the Bren Event Center on Sunday afternoon, falling to defending Big West Champion UC Irvine, 77-53. The Lions finished shooting 17-for-62 while the Anteaters hit 52.9 percent (27-for-51).
"The storyline of this one was turnovers, easy baskets and our shooting," said Head Coach Mike Dunlap. "They did a great job attacking our press for easy baskets. And when you shot 27 percent, you are not going to win many games. I am not going to chase that shadow. Bottom line, you can't hit shots, you don't win games."
Adom Jacko led the Lions (1-1) for the second straight game, scoring 17 points with six rebounds and a pair of steals. Brandon Brown added 14 points as the duo combined to hit 11 for 26 from the field. The rest of the team went six for 36.
Mike Best led all scorers with 22 points and eight rebounds for the Anteaters (2-0), who went to the NCAA tournament a year ago with virtually the same roster.
The Lions forced UC Irvine into 17 turnovers on nine steals. However, the Lions committed 16 themselves as UCI had 12 steals and led the points off turnovers category, 17-13.
"We have a lot to learn," said Dunlap. "We have to learn how to play on the road and play a team of this caliber."
The Lions will remain on the road as they head to Colorado State on Thursday, Nov. 19 for a 6 pm (PT) tip-off. Follow the game live on KXLU 88.9 FM.
