SAN DIEGO - Outshooting San Diego 16-2 over the 90-minute match, the LMU women's soccer team maintained its hold on first place in the West Coast Conference standings with a 1-0 shutout of the Toreros Thursday night in San Diego.
Shannon Kent provided the only goal needed in LMU's 12th victory of the season. The Lions are now 12-4-1 overall and 6-1-0 in WCC play. The Toreros drop to 3-13-2 overall and 1-6-0 in league play.
Moments after Sarah Sanger had a shot blocked by USD goalkeeper Michelle Craft, the Lions worked the ball back up the field. In the 30th minute, Jocelyn Blankenship sent a ball out to the right flank for Gabbie Sanfilippo who carried it to the endline. After beating a pair of Torero defenders the freshman defender sent a long cross into the box where Kent was able to redirect it with her head into the net.
LMU's defense did the rest from there on out, not allowing a shot to USD in the first half, and just two, neither on frame, in the second. Charles Pruitt earned her fourth solo shutout of the season, improving to 8-2-0 in goal. The Lions now have a combined nine shutouts on the year.
The week continues on Saturday, Oct. 31 with another key WCC match-up at BYU. Kick off from Provo, Utah, is scheduled for 7 p.m. local, 6 p.m. Pacific.
