LOS ANGELES - LMU women's soccer remained perfect on its home Sullivan Field in 2015 with a 2-1 win over visiting Saint Mary's as West Coast Conference play began Friday night.
The Lions improve to 7-3-1 overall and 1-0-0 in WCC play while the Gaels fall to 5-5-2 overall and 0-1-0 in league action.
Playing in pink jerseys for their annual breast cancer awareness match, the Lions did not disappoint an energetic crowd at Sullivan Field.
While not credited with the goal, or assist, Morgan Hilby was the instigator behind the Lions' first score - an own goal off the leg of a Saint Mary's defender. Hilby sent a low cross into the six-yard box from the right flank. In an attempt to clear the ball, the Gaels' Casidee Lynch deflected the ball into her own net, giving LMU a 1-0 advantage 27 minutes in.
Hilby would provide the eventual game-winner less than four minutes later, following a rebound with a quick volley shot back into the Gaels' net. Gabbie Sanfilippo, whose initial shot bounced off the crossbar and back to Hilby's feet, was credited with the assist.
The Lions surrendered a penalty kick to the Gaels in the 43rd minute after goalkeeper Charlee Pruitt was whistled for a hard tackle inside her own box. But the LMU defense would not budge in the second half, including a series of three back-to-back-to-back saves by Pruitt, to preserve the victory.
Pruitt finished the night with four saves in her third win of the season. LMU totaled nine shots to seven by Saint Mary's.
The Lions return to action on Sunday afternoon hosting Pacific in a 1 p.m. start at Sullivan Field.
