STOCKTON, Calif. - Exactly one week from doing it at San Francisco, the LMU men's basketball team erased another double-digit road deficit, this time overcoming an 11-point margin at Pacific with nine minutes to play to force overtime.
Once in the extra frame, the Lions were perfect from the field to claim a 76-71 win over the Tigers in West Coast Conference action in Stockton, Calif., Saturday afternoon.
Junior Marin Mornar led the Lions (7-16, 3-8) with his third double-double in six games, going for 23 points and 11 rebounds in 44 minutes of action. Sophomore Evan Payne joined him with 23 points and seven rebounds.
"It all comes down to one thing, guts," said Head Coach Mike Dunlap. "We just played with a ton of guts, no quit. To come on the road and get two of four - where we are as a program - is a huge for us. The guys are playing with a great attitude and just won't let go of the rope. Just keep on working and getting better."
Four players were in double figures for LMU, which wwas without starter Ayodeji Egbeyemi (quad strain). Junior David Humphries, who also played all but one minute of the game, added 14 points, while Godwin Okonji had 11 points and seven rebounds in 43 minutes.
"We were able to keep pace with them rebounding and that was key in keeping us close," said Dunlap, whose Lions out-rebounded the Tigers 39-32 and had a 17-11 edge in second-chance points. "The second thing is that we covered the three-pointer much better as the game progressed."
Pacific finished the game hitting 12-for-27 from three (44.4 percent), but hit just three in the final 15 minutes of the game. They finished shooting 46.4 percent from the field while the Lions went 28-for-61 (45.9 percent), hitting 6-of-12 from three, including 4-of-7 from Humphries.
Chase Flint had 10 assists and five steals as the Lions forced Pacific into 15 turnovers, holding a 27-16 edge in points-off-turnovers.
"And the biggest thing was the press," added Dunlap. "We were really aggressive with it and it really turned the game to our favor."
T.J. Wallace had 18 points to pace the Tigers (10-13, 2-9).
The Lions, who erased a 17-point deficit with 18 minutes to play at USF last Saturday, trailed 52-41 after a Wallace lay-up with 10:21 to play. The score would stay that way until Humphries hit a three-pointer with 8:39 to play.
From there, the Lions went on an 11-2 run to cut the lead to 54-52 on a Mornar three-pointer with 6:07 to play.
Pacific would hold the lead until 47 seconds left when Payne's lay-up tied it at 58-58. Both teams had chances to win it in regulation but couldn't hit.
After Pacific scored first in overtime, the Lions scored the next six points to take 65-61 lead. The Tigers would trim the lead to one twice, including a Gabriel Aguirre three-pointer with 55 seconds to play.
LMU would put the game away with five straight points, including a lay-up by Payne and a jumper by Humphries. The Lions hit all five of their field goals and 8-of-9 free throws in overtime.
The Lions return home for Family Weekend, opening with San Diego on Thursday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m.
NOTE: Time Warner Cable SportsNet will re-air the Lions overtime win tomorrow, Sunday, at 3:30 p.m.
