LOS ANGELES, Calif. -
The LMU men's tennis team (0-2) dropped a heartbreaker to UC Davis (2-2) on Friday afternoon at the LMU Tennis Center. The Lions saw both the doubles point and the decisive singles point come down to a single court, falling in both instances.
After freshmen Errol Smith and Alex Bourgeois recorded victories on courts one and six, respectively, to knot the team score at three points apiece, everything came down to court three and LMU junior Cristobal Rivera against Bryce McKelvie of UCD. Rivera, who earned the first set by a score of 6-1, saw his opponent force a third and decisive set by a way of a 6-3 decision in the second. It looked like LMU was en route to victory as Rivera held a 5-4 lead in the third, but McKelvie came alive down the stretch, winning the next three straight games to steal victory for the Aggies.
Senior Felix Van Kann had LMU's other singles win, dispatching Eli Whittle in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Smith and Joat Farah earned LMU's doubles victory, beating Whittle and Brett Bacharach, 6-1.
LMU will return to action on Sunday when it hosts Grand Canyon University at 11 a.m.
