LOS ANGELES -- Steven Haney, a 6-6 forward from Central Florida, has announced that he will transfer to Loyola Marymount this fall, signing a grant-in-aid agreement to attend LMU starting in the fall of 2014. Haney, who played 24 games as a freshman last year for the Knights, joins an impressive first class under Head Coach Mike Dunlap.
"We found an elite player to add to our program," said Head Coach Mike Dunlap. "He joins a recruiting class that is turning out to be pretty exceptional. We are excited about this incoming class."
Haney becomes the seventh member of the Lions' incoming class under Dunlap, joining Matt Hayes, Petr Herman, David Humphries, Simon Krajcovic, Jashua Spiers and Devin Wyatt. Haney will serve a redshirt season in 2014-15 due to NCAA transfer rules.
"Steven was a highly regarded player coming out of high school, and played for a good program at St. Thomas Aquinas in Florida," said Dunlap. "He was one of the top-125 players coming out of high school in 2012-13 and we are excited to have joining LMU." Haney was both an ESPN.com top-150 and a Rivals.com top-150.
Haney, who is a cousin to Magic Johnson, was named to second-team Florida Class 7A All-State after averaging 16.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals per contest for St. Thomas Aquinas. He was selected to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel All-Broward first-team and played in the USA vs. Florida Hardwood Showcase All-Star game.
As a junior, led Raiders to a 21-5 record while averaging 15.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per contest. He was named first-team SourceHoops Class 7A All-State and first-team FACA Class 7A All-State. He was also a Sun-Sentinel All-Broward first-team selection and a Miami Herald All-Broward County second-team selection.
With Haney as the centerpiece, the Raiders (21-5) rode a resurgence to the Class 7A regional semifinals, where they pushed eventual state champion Blanche Ely to the limit before falling 56-52.
Haney, who moved from Lansing, Mich., prior to his junior year of high school, picked up some valuable international playing experience in April of 2012 when he helped the United States U-18 team beat France 87-81 and finish seventh in the Albert Schweitzer Tournament in Germany.
