Team Play Gets Key GCC Win

LOS ANGELES -LMU women's water polo received goals from nine different players to earn a key 10-7 win over Pacific in Golden Coast Conference action on Friday afternoon at the Burns Aquatics Center.

"This was a very good win for us," said Head Coach Kyle Witt. "Pacific is a very good, well coached program and we were able to defend our home pool. That was a very important win for us."

Alexandra Honny had two goals while eight others scored, while Claire Wright made 10 saves as LMU improves to 16-9 on the season and 3-0 in GCC play. Pacific falls to 11-12 and 1-1.

"We had great balance today," said Witt. "This really was a great team effort for us."

The game featured six ties and three lead changes. The game was tied at 1-1 after the first quarter and then at 5-5 at the break thanks to Erin Byrne's goal with 59 seconds left in the second quarter.

Pacific would take the lead with 4:52 to play in the third quarter thanks to Gracie Smith's goal, making it 6-5. Just over two minutes later, Kingsley Hill would tie the game after an LMU timeout. The goal would start a 3-0 run that saw the Lions take control.

With 1:53 to play in the third quarter, Danielle Johnson would give the Lions the lead for good, making it 7-6. LMU would then draw an ejection on their next possession and Kassandra Smith would capitalize with 42 seconds left to make it 8-6 headed into the fourth quarter.

The Tigers would make it 8-7 with six minutes to play in the game on Taylor Adair's third goal of the game. However, LMU would would score on another 6-on-5 attack, making it 9-7 on Laura Lopez's goal with 4:43 to play. Ivana Castro added the final goal with 2:54 to play.

The Lions continue their GCC home stand when they host Santa Clara on Saturday, March 29 at 12 noon. The game will be broadcast live on LMU Sports Network and will feature Senior Day ceremonies for Honny, Erin Manke, Smith and Kiara Cerda.
