LOS ANGELES - The LMU softball team had a seven-game win streak snapped Saturday at Smith Field, dropping a pair of games to Cal State Northridge, 9-1 (5 inn) and 7-5.
The Lions (13-10) suffered a combined eight fielding errors in the two games while also struggling to get key this at the plate.
LMU managed just three hits in the opening game, one each by Breeanna Sandoval, Alex Finie and Meghan Harman, while also giving up five unearned runs due to fielding errors.
The Matadors (17-9) scored once in the first, then broke open the game with a four-run second on four hits and two LMU errors. CSUN would add one run in the third and three more in the fourth.
The Lions looked to rally with two outs in the third as the bases loaded for Harman. The senior third baseman got things started with an RBI-single to left. But the rally would end there.
Stephanie Crist (1-5) took the loss for LMU as the five unearned runs were scored during her 1.1 innings in the circle. Andy Wellins tossed the final 3.2 innings, giving up seven hits for four runs.
The Matadors jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap as well, scoring three times in the top of the first. But the Lion bats responded this time. A three-run homer by Harman in the fourth would bring LMU to within one, 6-5, but they would leave the bases loaded in the sixth and were unable to rally in the seventh.
Rachael Farrington struck out four and surrendered a dozen hits in the complete-game loss.
Harman led LMU on the day, going a combined 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Ander Lopez, Sandoval and Sterling Shuster all posted a pair of hits in the second game.
The Lions return to Smith Field on Wednesday, March 19-Sunday, March 23, hosting the LMU Invitational II. LMU's first tournament game is Wednesday at 1 p.m. versus Harvard.
