LOS ANGELES -- Sophomore guard Matt Hayes has been on quite the ride the last 24 months, winning a state championship at high school, claiming another one in junior college and then landing a chance to play NCAA Division I basketball with LMU. He know finds himself in Hawaii as he and the Lions head into a match-up with the 11th-ranked team in the nation.
LMU Sports Network caught up with the sophomore guard as the Lions finished preparations for their opening game of the 2014 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic against 11th-ranked Wichita State, who has only lost twice in the last two seasons.
Hayes, who is ranked fifth in the West Coast Conference with 2.3 three-pointers per game, talks about making the transition to LMU, what is the biggest adjustment he has had to make and the opportunity to play in Hawaii.
The Lions take on the Shockers today, Monday, Dec. 22 with game time is set for 8 pm (PT), 6 pm in Hawaii. The previous meeting was on Dec. 2, 1983 in Wichita. The Shockers erased a 10-point halftime deficit by outscoring the Lions 40-28 in the second half to earn a 75-73 victory. The Shockers (8-1) are ranked 11th in the Associated Press (Dec. 15) with an RPI of No. 3, and will be the first ranked opponent of the season for the Lions.
