LOS ANGELES - Playing it's third Pac-12 Conference opponent on the road of the young season, LMU jetted out to a fast start and held a lead as large as 12. However, the lead would not hold as Stanford's Chasson Randle scored 31 points to lead the Cardinal to a 67-58 come-from-behind victory at Maples Pavilion on Wednesday night.
A dunk by Marin Mornar and a free throw from Ayodeji Egbeyemi put the Lions up 31-19 with 3:41 left in the first half. Stanford would cut the lead to 31-27 at the break and Randle would score 20 of his game-high 31 in the second half to push the Cardinal (6-2) past the Lions (3-6).
LMU, who shot 50 percent in the first half including a 57 percent (4-for-7) clip from three, was held to 44 percent in the second half. LMU finished the game shooting 47.1 percent to Stanford's 41.5. The Lions would attempt just six free throws, making four, while Stanford went 17-for-23.
Turnovers once again hurt the Lions on the road as they committed 17 to Stanford's eight, giving the Cardinal a 20-9 edge in points off turnovers.
"Ultimately, turnovers really hurt us again," said Head Coach Mike Dunlap. "Have to give Chasson credit, he played a great game and he presented situations we didn't have answers to."
Evan Payne led the Lions' balanced scoring with 14 points. No other Lion had double figures, but four others had eight or more points. Matt Hayes added nine points, while Patson Siame, Mornar and Simon Krajcovic had eight each. Egbeyemi had seven points with eight rebounds and four assists.
"We continue to learn the correlation between a game and then practice," said Dunlap. "We have struggled at our transition defense but tonight we did a better job. We showed improvement."
The Lions out rebounded Stanford 31-30 and finished with a 30-24 edge in points in the paint.
"We have played a tough schedule and for a young team it can't do anything but help as long as we keep our morale up," said Dunlap. "Morale has to stay up and it is up to us to lead by example."
The Lions schedule will continue to get tougher as they travel to Hawaii for the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic starting on Dec. 22 with 11th-ranked Wichita State.
