LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Liam Jennis scored a career-best six goals as LMU men's water polo claimed a 20-17 overtime win over California Baptist in Western Water Polo Association action on Saturday afternoon at Burns Aquatics Center.
The goal total equalled the highest scoring game in program history as the 37 combined goals tied the 37 in a 19-18 overtime loss to Chaminade on Oct. 16, 1997. The 37 goals sets the all-time record at the Burns Aquatics Center, which opened in 2000-01. The previous record was 30 set in a 21-9 win on Oct. 16, 2010.
It was a shootout from the start and the Lions scored five goals in the two overtime sessions to pull away for the win. HJennis scored three of his goals in the extra frames. Matt Cuozzo, Vuk Cvetkovic and Emanuel Di Stasio all had hat tricks for the Lions. Cody Wetherbee had five goals to lead CBU.
With the win, the Lions pull even with Air Force for second in the WWPA standings at 3-2. They face each other on Sunday at the Burns Aquatics Center with start time set at 12 noon. California Baptist falls to 1-5 in the WWPA.
It was back-and-forth throughout the contest and the Lions held a 12-11 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Wetherbee scored in the first four seconds of the quarter to tie the game. His 6-on-5 goal would give the Lancers a 12-12 lead with 6:14 to play in regulation.
Jennis would respond with 5:39 to play on a 6-on-5 goal of his own to tie it and then Kyle Etrata rose high out of the water to give the Lions a 14-13 lead with 3:50 to play.
California Baptist would draw an five-meter penalty and Wehterbee capitalized with 3:22 to play to tie the game at 14-14.
The scoring wasn't finished as the Lions looked to take the lead for good with 1:01 to play when Cvetkovic scored his third of the game. However, the Lansers scored on a yet another 6-on-5 opportunity to tie the game with 40 seconds left to send it to overtime.
Another penalty goal, the third of the game, for the Lancers gave them the quick lead in overtime 16-15. However, the Lions scored the next four to take control.
Nicholas Zanobini tied the game at 16-16 and Jennis gave the Lions the lead for good with 17 seconds left in the first overtime session. He then made it a two-goal lead with the first possession of the final overtime frame. After Jon Beck made it 19-16, CBU answered to cut it two a pair with 1:32 left.
Jennis would added the final tally with 11 seconds to play, setting the Burns record for combined goals at 37.
