LOS ANGELES - The fourth game of the 2014 LMU Classic between the Lions and Boise State took on the look of a late season conference battle more than that of the second game of the new season. It featured 10 lead changes and 10 ties and plenty of moments for both teams. In the end the experience Broncos used a 12-0 late run to claim a 77-69 win at Gersten Pavilion on Saturday night.
Senior Godwin Okonji earned his second career double double with 15 points and 10 rebounds as the Lions out rebounded their opponent for the second straight night, this time 32 to 29. Sophomore Evan Payne led all scorers with 22 points and Marin Mornar equalled his career best with 13 points.
However, it was eight three-pointers that was the difference for Boise State. Nick Duncan scored all 15 of his points from the three-point line (5-for-9) and was joined by Mickey Thompson with 15 points off the bench. Boise State went 8-for-23 from long range (34.8 percent) while the Lions went 4-for-14 (28.6).
"In the end, experience really cost us," said Head Coach Mike Dunlap. "We didn't know how to carry a lead very well and got very stagnant on offense and defense."
The Lions led 61-59 on a pair of free throws from Payne with 4:33 to play. The Broncos then went on that 12-0 run, capped by three-pointers from Duncan and Derrick Marks with 1:28 to play to build a 71-61 lead. Marks finished with 11 points thanks to six straight free throws down the stretch to ice the win.
Boise State, who hit their last five field goal attempts of the game, finished hitting 21-of-24 (87.5 percent) from the free throw line. The Lions went 17-for-22 (77.3 percent).
"We will learn positive lessons from this," said Dunlap. "We faced a team and a program that is much further along and has a lot of experience. There is way more good coming out tonight for us than bad. We have a lot of good things to teach with."
The Lions head on the road for the first time on the season as they take on Arizona State on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 6 pm (PT). The game can be heard on KXLU 88.9 FM and can be seen on the Pac-12 Network.
