SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The first leg of LMU's Northern California road swing started with a bang as the 18th ranked Lions used a seven-goal run to defeat 16th-ranked Santa Clara, 10-7, in a Western Water Association match-up Friday night.
Trailing 4-2 with two minutes to play in the first quarter, the Lions rattled off seven straight goals for a big WWPA win. LMU, Santa Clara and UC Davis all entered the weekend at 1-1 in conference play.
Milutin Mitrovic scored five goals for the Lions, including three in the key run. Freshman Dominick Beaudine made nine saves in goal.
Santa Clara jumped out to a 2-0 lead and led 4-2 after a goal with 2:25 to play in the opening frame.
With :26 second to go, sophomore Liam Jennis scored to cut the lead to just one and kick started the Lions' run. After about three minutes in the second quarter, sophomore Jon Beck tied the game at 4-4. A tight second quarter continued until Mitrovic gave the Lions the lead for good with 2:35 to play.
While Beaudine and LMU's defense kept Santa Clara off the board in the second, it set-up a four goal third to put the game away.
The Lions drew a 6-on-5 with two seconds to play in the half and then won the sprint thanks to Beck to set-up the odd-man attack. Mitrovic capitalized to make it 6-4 just 22 seconds in. Kyle Etrata made it 7-4 on the very next possession.
Less than two minutes later the Lions continued the attack as Mitrovic made it 8-4 less than three minutes into the half. After fighting off an exclusion, the Lions got a second goal from Jennis to make it 9-4 with 3:26 to play.
Santa Clara finally stopped the run in the final minutes of the quarter. However, Vuk Cvetkovic got the goal right back by scoring on the first possession of the fourth quarter. The Broncos scored two goals in the closing couple minutes for the final score.
The road swing continues with UC Davis on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 11 am.
