LOS ANGELES -- Day two of the UCLA Bruin Invitational put LMU women's water polo to the test, facing a pair of top-10 teams within four hours of each other. The Lions came out with a split, earning a 12-7 win over No. 8 San Jose State before falling to host and third-ranked UCLA, 15-6.

Sophomore Claire Wright anchored the Lions with 28 saves in the two games, earning 17 against the Bruins. The Lions open the season 3-1 overall.

LMU opened the day with an impressive five-goal win over San Jose State, using a five-goal second quarter to take a three-goal lead and never look back.

With the game tied at 4-4, the Lions got the third goal of the quarter from Castro with 2:03 to play for a 5-4 lead. Lopez then scored her first of three with 1:20 left in the first half for a 6-4 lead. Then with one second left in the half, Bridgette Alvarez scored for a 7-4 edge.

San Jose State managed to cut the lead to a pair, 9-7, with 6:50 to play in the game but the Lions responded with the final three goals of the game. Lopez scored two of the three with Alexandra Honny adding the other.

In game 10 of the tournament, UCLA ended the Lions' thoughts of another top-10 upset early, scoring five goals in each of the first two quarter, including a shutout in the second quarter for a 10-2 lead at the break.

Honny led the Lions with five of the six goals.

The Lions have a couple weeks off before traveling to the UC San Diego Triton Invitational on Feb. 8-9.
