SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Lions got a much needed win in Spokane on Saturday as the LMU men's tennis team defeated the Gonzaga Bulldogs 4-3. The Lions improve to 3-16 and 1-4 in conference play while the Bulldogs drop to 7-11 overall and 0-5 in the WCC.
For LMU, the win marks the first since March 17, which was a match also played against Gonzaga. Two of the three Lion wins this season have come against the Bulldogs, but today's match was the one that counted for WCC standings.
In the doubles round, the Lions won on all three courts. The German sophomore duo of Felix Van Kann and Othar Kordsachia continued their unbeaten streak, winning for the sixth time together as they got the 8-7 victory on Court 1. Todd Volmari and Sebastian Bustamante won 8-5 on Court 2 and the team of Daniel Simko and Jack Zapala also won 8-5 on Court 3 to help the Lions secure the doubles point.
The Lions and Bulldogs would split play in the singles round, each winning on three of six courts. Volmari was the first to finish for LMU, getting a quick 6-2, 6-0 win on Court 2. Shortly afterwards, Cristobal Rivera won 6-4, 6-2 on Court 4, giving the Lions their third point.
But Gonzaga would win the next three matches to level things up, meaning the match would be decided on Court 6. Under pressure, it would be Simko for who prevailed for the Lions to earn a 6-1, 6-2 victory and clinch the 4-3 team win for LMU.
After three weeks away from home, the Lions will return to the LMU Tennis Center for their next match against San Diego on Friday, April 12 at 1:30 p.m.
