BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Hannah Montalban collected her first collegiate grand slam to help the LMU softball team to a 7-6 win over PCSC rival CSU Bakersfield Sunday. The victory salvaged a doubleheader split as the Lions (19-16, 2-2 PCSC) fell 2-0 in the first game of the day.

Dana Waldusky (4-12) pitched brilliantly in the opener, allowing just two hits through the first six innings. But the senior got little support from her team's offense as the Lions managed just two hits of their own in the game.

It would eventually be Bakersfield (5-18, 2-2 PCSC) who broke the pitcher's duel open in the one half of the sixth. Karissa Veiga led off with a walk, stole second and scored on a Laura King triple down the left field line. Shay Fryer followed with a single to right center and would scored in a double to center by Amber Mills.

Sydney Gouveia relieved Waldusky and closed out the inning with a pair of strikeouts, but the Lions went three-up, three down in the top of the seventh.

It was not until the sixth inning of game two when the LMU bats finally got going. The Lions posted a five-spot, capped by a grand slam by freshman Hannah Montalban. LMU added two more runs in the seventh as Skylar Segura led off with a single and would later score on a wild pitch. Stephanie Maciel added a solo home run to give the Lions a 7-2 pad.

The Roadrunners made things interesting in the final frame, rallying for four runs on three hits and two Lion fielding errors, but came up just one run shy of forcing extra innings as LMU held on for the 7-6 victory.

Gouveia, who posted 10 strikeouts, moved to 10-2 on the year. Segura, Sterling Shuster and Maciel each had a pair of hits while three others had one hit apiece.

PCSC play continues on March 29-30 as the Lions travel to face Santa Clara in a four-game set.
