LA JOLLA, Calif. -- LMU women's water polo opened the 2013 UC San Diego Triton Invitational with a split, falling to the host Tritons in the final seconds before rebounding for a seven-goal win over Marist on Saturday in La Jolla, Calif.

Playing for the first time since LMU knocked off UC San Diego in the Western Water Polo Association Championships last April by a goal on the Triton's campus, 19th-ranked UC San Diego scored the games final three goals, including the game winner with two seconds left to earn an 8-7 win over the Lions.

In the second game, the Lions jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the fourth quarter, shutout Marist in the second and third quarters, to improve to 4-4 on the season. Junior Alexandra Honny had four goals in the win.

Against the Tritons, Honny scored both her goals in the first quarter to give the Lions a 2-1 lead after one. However, UCSD outscored the Lions 3-1 in the second frame to take a 4-3 lead at the break.

The teams split goals to open the second half before the Lions scored three straight to take a 7-5 lead with 2:48 to play in the third quarter on a goal by freshman Ivana Castro.

The Tritons would then earn a 6-on-5 opportunity and then score on that possession after the exclusion ended to cut the lead to one, 7-6, heading into the final quarter.

They wasted little time with the tying goal, scoring with 6:37 to play in the game. The defenses would hold strong for the next 6:35, but Sarah Lizotte would put the ball in the net with just two seconds left for the winner.

The Lions will play the winner of Sonoma State and CSU Bakersfield at 12 pm at Canyonview Pool.
