LOS ANGELES-- LMU men's basketball was on the road for a month and returned home this week for the first time since Nov. 17. In addition to home games, the Lions were able to get back to action in the community as well, with the community outreach program LMU Cares picking back up on Monday at Franklin D. Parent School in Inglewood.
The LMU Sports Network went with the Lions to the school this week.
LMU Cares continues to partner with Project Knapsack in building relationships with local elementary and middle schools. Through these relationships, LMU helps foster international connections between the local schools and those in South Africa. This past Monday, the Lions visited the Parent School and its after school program, which is called The Dreamers and is sponsored by the I Have a Dream Foundation. It was the start of a program that will go throughout the year, helping the students prepare correspondence with partner schools in South Africa.
The team takes every opportunity throughout the year to visit the Dreamers and invite them to several games during the season. The Dreamers will then become pen pals with eighth grade students at Molalatladi Primary School.
Through the LMU Cares program, the men's basketball team, has provided over 5,000 brand new knapsacks filled with school supplies to elementary and secondary students in the local community, and at their sister school, the Molalatladi Primary School in Soweto, South Africa. Over the past five years, the team has raised enough money to expand the library and computer lab at Molalatladi Primary School.
Project Knapsack is a global pen pal and back-pack exchange program that partners students in the US with pen pals in Africa.
