Senior Sheree Shea had the best time for a WCC runner in the women's 6k.

Women 2nd, Men 4th at Conference Preview Race

PORTLAND, Ore. -- LMU Cross Country got a preview of what awaits in late October. Several West Coast Conference teams met to run at Fernhill Park, where the LMU women finished second and the LMU men finished fourth at the site of the upcoming WCC Championships. Senior Sheree Shea finished second overall in the women's competition.

Shea turned in the best time for a WCC runner in the 6k race. Her time of 21:06.12 was only seconds behind overall winner Caroline Austin of Washington State. Senior Caroline Draper was the second finisher for the Lions, running a time of 21:42.37 which was 10th overall. Senior Cassandra Salazar and freshman Kelli Sugimoto finished 12th and 13th overall, respectively. Salazar set a new personal record, running the race in 21:47.12. Sugimoto finished in 21:47.46 in her first 6k race.

The Lions' fifth, sixth, and seventh runners to cross the finish line did so as a pack finishing 17th through 19th. Callie Mulgannon and Sarah Vitug crossed at 22:03.68 and 22:04.37, respectively. Freshman Melanie Joerger was close behind at 22:10.50

LMU finished second behind conference rival Gonzaga. The Lions had a score of 53 (2-10-12-13-16), second-best amongst the seven teams competing.

The LMU men set several personal records at Fernhill Park. Junior Weston Strum finished 10th in the 8k race, with a time of 23:38.47, a personal record. Senior Sterling Lockert ran the course in 23:49, also a new PR. Sophomore Daniel Gibson finished 22nd in 23:56.12. Senior Tyre Johnson also set a new personal record of 24:14.09 for 33rd overall. Michael Vorgitch finished the race in 24:22.31, a new personal best for the sophomore.

Junior Drew Dalton completed the race with a time of 24:48.22, 47th overall. Junior Mike Evans set a personal record time of 25:22.81 for 64th.

LMU placed fourth in the six-team race. The University of Portland finished first.

The Lions will be back in action next Saturday, Sept. 22 competing at the Mustang Challenge Collegiate Invitational in Santa Clarita, Calif. The meet begins at 8:00 a.m.
