SAN BRUNO, Calif. - A big question asked when the West Coast Conference added BYU as a ninth member this July was what will a nine-team conference schedule, specifically for men's basketball and its many broadcast opportunities.

The WCC has given that answer. It has some new twists.

The conference released its 2011-12 men's basketball schedule and the Lions will begin conference play on New Year's Eve at the University of San Francisco. It's the first time the WCC will begin before Jan. 1 and the first time it will feature a 16-game conference slate.

In addition, the Lions will play on the road in five of the first seven games and will take on the league's newest member, BYU, twice within the first two weeks. They will have a Monday conference game, a Wednesday conference game and the traditional travel partner set-up is the thing of the past, as evident by the Lions opening stretch.

"We knew it would be different," said Head Coach Max Good. "I like the four-game stretch at home. But we will be tested with five early road games and BYU twice within two weeks. Bottom line, we all have to lace up our shoes, line-up and play. And this is going to be fun. Lots of fun. I am excited to get started."

Speaking of the Cougars, that is the Lions' first opponent at Gersten Pavilion of the WCC season on Thursday, Jan. 5. The Lions will then play at San Diego on Saturday, Jan. 7 and then at Pepperdine on Thursday, Jan. 12.

LMU will then return home to face Gonzaga on Saturday, Jan. 14, followed by a trip to BYU on Thursday, Jan. 19.

"No one said this was going to be easy," said Good. "This league has always been tough and it just keeps getting better. This league is loaded and anyone who wins it will have earned it."

The twists keep coming. Following BYU on Thursday, the Lions do not play Saturday but will make its second of three different trips to the Bay Area when they play in Santa Clara on Monday, Jan. 23 to complete their stretch of five road games in the first seven WCC games.

LMU will then return home for that four-game homestand. It begins with Saint Mary's on Thursday, Jan. 26 followed by Portland on Saturday, Jan. 28 for Homecoming 2012. The Lions will then host Pepperdine on Thursday, Feb. 2 for the completion of the Wells Fargo PCH Cup. The homestand ends with San Francisco on Saturday, Feb. 4.

One thing that hasn't change is the trip to the Pacific Northwest. The Lions will travel to Portland on Feb. 9 followed by Gonzaga on Feb. 11. LMU will then make its third and final trip north when they head to Saint Mary's on Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Following the Lions' ESPN BracketBuster game the weekend of Feb. 17-19, the Lions will close the regular season at home with a more traditional looking homestand. The Lions will play San Diego on Thursday, Feb. 23 and then Santa Clara on Saturday, Feb. 25 for Senior Day.

Season tickets for the Lions 2011-12 campaign are on sale. LMU will play a record of 18 games at home this season, with three more games as part of the Centennial Classic on Dec. 2-4. To purchase tickets, visit the LMU Ticket Homepage.

The first look of the Lions will be the weekend of Oct. 22 with Madness at Midnight and the Crimson and Navy Scrimmage.
