LOS ANGELES - LMU junior Kelly Sarginson's record-breaking 2011 season has earned her a spot on the National Fastpitch Coaches Association/Louisville Slugger All-West Region Second Team, the organization announced Thursday. Sarginson was the only representative from the Pacific Coast Softball Conference Coastal Division on the West Region team, while three players from Portland State, members of the PCSC Mountain Division, were named to the All-Pacific Region Second Team.
Sarginson, a native of Walnut Creek, Calif., was selected at the Utility/Non-Pitcher position to become the Lions' first All-Region selection since 2008 and the 12th in school history. In 2011, she set new PCSC and school records with 18 home runs and 59 RBI to go along with a .308 average. In PCSC play, she hit eight homers with 25 RBI and became the first player in PCSC history to homer three times in a game when she did so against Cal State Bakersfield on April 30, a game in which she also tied the LMU single-game record with seven RBI.
Sarginson ranks among the national leaders in multiple categories. She is ninth in total home runs, 23rd in home runs per game (0.31), 35th in RBI per game (1.0), 80th in walks per game (0.59), and 107th in slugging percentage (.669). Her slugging percentage was the eighth-highest in a single-season at LMU and she also posted an on-base percentage of .428, thanks in part to a league-high 35 walks, the second-most in a single-season in LMU history.
Thanks to her record-breaking 18 round-trippers this year, Sarginson moved into the LMU career top-10 for home runs, currently sitting in fourth place with 31. She also sits in a tie for fifth with 113 career RBI and her career slugging percentage of .567 ranks third.
Sarginson was named the Coastal Division Player of the Week three times in 2011, matching Sam Fischer (2011) and Christine Foley (2007) for the most in a single-season in LMU history. Sarginson posted a team-high 16 multi-RBI games, including four multi-HR games, and proved to be outstanding in the clutch, registering 42 of her 59 RBI with two outs and hitting .415 with runners in scoring position.. She was one of three players in the PCSC this year to hit two grand slams, having hit those against Bethune-Cookman on March 19 and at #6 UCLA on April 6.
