LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The LMU men wrapped up their tournament play today finishing fifth overall at the West Coast Conference Championship Tournament hosted at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif. After falling to close rival Saint Mary's on the first day of the tournament, the LMU men came back for a win on the final day defeating Portland 4-2 to win the consolation bracket and place fifth overall.
In their final match of the tournament, the Lions earned a win over Portland 4-2. Even after dropping the doubles point, the Lions came back with strong singles play to carry them to a team victory. In doubles the Lions earned a win on court two from Nicholas Bjerke and Aris Andreasian where the duo defeated Wo/Guay of Portland 8-3 for the Lions only doubles win. On courts one and three, the Pilots rivaled the Lions defeating Wilton/Bustamante 8-2 on court one and Simko/Price in a close 9-7 on court three.
LMU came back strong in singles play the Lions to win the match 4-2 overall. Nicholas Bjerke once again led the Lions with strong conference play and recorded a solid win over Hernandez on court two 6-2, 6-3. Tom Price recorded his second singles victory of the tournament over Gill of Portland in an even 6-3, 6-3 on court five. Freshman Daniel Simko defeated Guay in 7-5, 6-2 on court six to give the Lions three points on the day against the Pilots. Finally Sebastian Bustamante secured the win for the Lions on court three. After dropping the first set 4-6, Bustamante came back to defeat Thorp of Portland 6-3, 6-2 in the final two sets.
With these singles victories, the Lions had the four points needed to win the match and the consolation bracket. In other singles play, Alex Wilton lost a close match to Huk Wo 6-3, 7-6 (5) on court four. Senior Aris Andreasian won his first set 6-3 while Ferrero took the second set 3-6 for and even split when the match was decided.
With a young team, the LMU men wrapped up their season with a strong win today on the final day of the tournament. Top ranked San Diego won the tournament for the first time since 1989. Santa Clara took second, while Saint Mary's finished 3rd, San Francisco finished 4th, LMU 5th, Portland 6th and Gonzaga 7th.
