LMU Spring Blood Drive Holds New Meaning

Feb. 15, 2011

CBS Feature on Loughran and LMU Men's Water Polo

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The 2011 LMU Spring Blood Drive sponsored through the LMU Center for Service and Action, began on Tuesday, Feb. 15 and will run through Thursday, Feb. 17. And for LMU men's water polo head coach John Loughran, a "simple" blood drive has been given a much bigger meaning.

Loughran, who was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL) on Christmas Day 2009, credits the fact he is in complete remission to those willing to donate blood.

"The only reason I was able to become in complete remission was from the support of so many people, many of whom I don't even know. If it wasn't for their donations of blood and blood platelets, I might not be here," said Loughran.

Many within the LMU water polo program, led by Loughran, are encouraging all able to visit the LMU Spring Blood Drive and donate.

"These things are so important," said Loughran. "It is amazing how much need there is for blood and blood platelets."
